SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Boys Swim Coach will assist the head coach with the training and instruction of student athletes as well as other duties as assigned. Previous coaching experience preferred. MSHSL "Coaches Clipboard" modules must be completed prior to start of season. All assistant coaches are under the immediate supervision of the head varsity coach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in planning and conducting effective training sessions.
  • Provide technical instruction and guidance to enhance player skills.
  • Monitor individual and team performance, offering constructive feedback.
  • Encourage proper conditioning, strength training, and injury prevention.
  • Support players in setting and achieving performance goals.
  • Work with the Head Coach to develop game plans and tactics.
  • Analyze opponents and adjust team strategies accordingly.
  • Assist with in-game decision-making, substitutions, and play calling.
  • Supply players with tactical adjustments during competition.
  • Review game footage and identify areas for improvement.
  • Organize and lead specific drills, warm-ups, and scrimmages.
  • Ensure efficient and structured practice sessions.
  • Help maintain team discipline and foster a positive culture.
  • Motivate and mentor players to build confidence and teamwork.
  • Support in coordinating team-building activities.
  • Provide input on player selection and roster management.
  • Assist with tryouts and talent assessment.
  • Manage equipment, uniforms, and other team resources.
  • Ensure compliance with league rules and organizational policies.
  • Communicate with players, parents, and team staff.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive team environment.
  • Act as a role model by demonstrating professionalism and sportsmanship.
  • Give guidance on mental preparation and motivation.

  • Deep understanding of the game's rules, strategies, techniques, and fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with strength training, endurance programs, and injury prevention techniques.
  • Ability to analyze opponents, develop game plans, and adapt strategies during competitions.
  • Knowledge of skill progression, mental conditioning, and motivation techniques.
  • Awareness of proper warm-ups, stretching, rehabilitation, and first aid procedures.
  • Understanding of league policies, eligibility requirements, and ethical coaching standards.
  • Able to teach, demonstrate, and reinforce sport-specific techniques and strategies.
  • Strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills to motivate players and collaborate with staff.
  • Effectively organize practices, drills, and player rotations.
  • Quick thinking to adjust tactics, handle conflicts, and make game-time decisions.
  • Ability to assess player strengths, weaknesses, and potential for development.
  • Balancing multiple responsibilities, from practice planning to game preparation.
  • Adjusting coaching approaches based on player needs, game situations, and team goals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Coaches often remain on their feet for extended periods during practices, games, and training sessions.
  • May need to move across the field, court, or training area to demonstrate drills, observe players, and manage game activities.
  • Required for demonstrating techniques, assisting players, or setting up training equipment.
  • May involve carrying sports equipment, setting up training gear, or assisting with player conditioning (weights, cones, etc.).
  • Depending on the sport, Assistant Coaches may need to throw, catch, or pass balls during drills.
  • May need to physically demonstrate moves, plays, or skills, requiring agility, flexibility, and coordination.
  • Some sports may require active participation in warm-ups, scrimmages, or skill-building exercises.
  • May involve supporting injured athletes off the field or providing immediate physical assistance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • For outdoor sports, Assistant Coaches may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, or wind.
  • Coaching often takes place in loud stadiums, gyms, or fields with high noise levels.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED - Minimum requirement for entry-level coaching positions, particularly at youth or community levels.
  • Experience as a player or assistant coach is often required; prior coaching experience at youth levels is a plus.
  • Sport-specific knowledge gained from playing is often considered valuable for understanding team dynamics and player development.
